Last week's announcements from Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and others are a crystal-clear sign: we're diving headfirst into the next wave of consumer computing, and it's all about generative AI. These seismic shifts don't happen often, but when they do, they change everything.
AI concepts have been around for ages, almost as long as computing itself. But what we're witnessing now is a full-blown renaissance. It's reshaping existing businesses, birthing entirely new ones, and transforming how we interact with computers, work, and play.
How Did We Get Here? A Quick Recap
To grasp the possibilities, let's rewind a bit:
- Personal Computer Era (1980s): Remember when PCs first started appearing in homes and offices? Companies like Microsoft, IBM, and Apple led the charge with machines like the IBM PC, Apple II, and my first love, the Commodore PET. Basic (pun intended) computing tasks and gaming became a reality
- Desktop Internet Era (Mid-1990s): Netscape Navigator opened the floodgates to the World Wide Web. Portals like Yahoo and AOL ruled early on, followed by the rise of vertical portals (think ESPN, New York Times) and the explosion of user-generated content ("web2"). Google became our compass in this vast digital landscape.
- Mobile Apps Era (2007 Onward): The iPhone launch (and later Android) changed the game. We shifted to smartphones, and apps like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Uber became part of our daily lives.
- AI Era (Now): The release of ChatGPT is our modern-day "Netscape moment." AI feels like magic – it's transforming everything from healthcare to entertainment to gaming.
Why AI Isn't Just Another Fad
We've seen "false starts" before (AR/VR, wearables, IoT). But AI is different. It's already woven into our lives, and we can barely keep up with the demand. AI has that "product-market fit" – it's showing clear advantages, compatibility, simplicity, and real-world value. It also passes the Diffusion of Innovations test, I've talked about before.
The Future is AI
Imagine AI-powered gaming that adapts to your style, personalized media recommendations, and interactive storytelling. In industries, AI could optimize manufacturing, improve supply chains, and spark product innovation.
I'm personally thrilled about AI. I'm experimenting with it daily and can't wait to explore its potential further. The future is bright, and AI is here to stay.
